Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. It celebrates culture, community, history and most of all, freedom. The Hamilton Hill Arts Center (HHAC) introduced the celebration of Juneteenth to the Capital Region in 2001 and it has become an important community celebration in Schenectady and the entire Capital Region. For many, it marks the beginning of the summer. Juneteenth is free and open to the public and is the only community-wide African American festival held in the City of Schenectady. It is a celebration for the entire community; with the end of slavery, all Americans were free – something we can all celebrate. Saturday’s events include workshops, vendors and information booths, activities for children and performances by children and adults from the stage.Â
